World Drowning Prevention Day: A Call to Action for Safety

Every year on 25 July, the world comes together to recognise World Drowning Prevention Day—a day dedicated to raising awareness about one of the most preventable causes of death globally: drowning.

Why It Matters

Drowning claims hundreds of thousands of lives globally each year, with children and young adults among the most vulnerable.
In 2024 alone, Royal Life Saving Australia reported a total of 323 fatal drownings.
Many of these tragedies occurred in everyday settings—backyard pools, rivers, beaches, and even at home. The hopeful news?  Drowning is preventable.

What You Can Do

This World Drowning Prevention Day, we’re encouraging everyone to take one action that could help save a life:

✅ Supervise children and weak swimmers at all times
✅ Learn CPR and basic rescue techniques
✅ Respect the water—never swim alone or under the influence
✅ Educate others about water safety
✅ Secure your home—close pool fences and empty buckets or bathtubs

Join the Movement

Whether you’re a parent, carer, swimmer, or simply someone who enjoys the water, you have a role to play in preventing drowning. Share this message, start a conversation, and take action.

Together, we can make our communities safer—one swim at a time.
