Drowning is fast. It’s silent. And it can happen in less than 20 seconds. 

There’s no splash, no warning, and often no obvious sign that something is wrong. It happens quietly, and by the time it’s recognised, there may be very little time to respond. 

The reality is that drowning continues to impact families across Australia every year. According to Royal Life Saving Australia’s National Drowning Report 2025, there were 357 drowning deaths, the highest on record and well above the national average. 

For many parents, safety around water feels like supervision. Watching closely. Staying nearby. 

But supervision alone doesn’t teach a child what to do. 

When something unexpected happens, children don’t have time to think it through. What they do in that moment comes down to instinct, and instinct is built through practice.
